Unbeatable publicity opportunity for members

The TTA has been approached by a photographer taking the images for a new coffee table book entitled "SA Top Spots", to be published by Struik Publishers in September 2011. The book will be distributed and sold at all high profile outlets in South Africa. The writer of the book is Sean Fraser, a well known author who has done numerous other best-selling publications dealing with the tourism industry in South Africa.

SA Top Spots will feature 21 of South Africa's most popular and prominent tourism locations and attractions, one of them being Tshwane and surrounds. Being featured in the book as one of the locations is going to give you free exposure to the locals and foreign visitors who buy the book and will be extremely good publicity.

The photographer will be responsible for taking all the images and will be travelling around the country during August to visit the featured locations. Every place he have contacted so far has agreed to assist me with free accommodation and/or free access to their establishment and they will get mentioned in the acknowledgments section of the book.

He plans to be visiting Pretoria on 9 August and would like to photograph major attractions in the area that members can suggest. The more attractions photographed in a location the more prominently that city will feature in the book.

If you are willing to assist with any of the following please contact Vanessa on secretary@tshwanetourism.com

  • Suggestion of prominent attractions in Tshwane to be photographed
  • Overnight accommodation and/or meals for the photographer
  • Tour guide services to point out good locations for photographs to the photographer

This is a tremendous opportunity for the city to feature as a prominent South African tourist destination and we hope that members will rise to the occasion and ensure the city gets a top spot in this coffee table book.

Mandela Day - get involved in member initiatives!

Mandela Day on 18 July is an annual international day adopted by the United Nations. It is more than a celebration of Nelson Mandela's life and legacy; it is a global movement to take his life's work into a new century and change our world for the better. Mandela Day asks us all to embrace Madiba's values and honour his legacy through an act of kindness. Who knows, it might leave you inspired enough to make every day a Mandela Day!

The following are member initiatives you can get involved in:

Kwalata Game Ranch

On the TTA website is a presentation drafted by Kwalata to get an accommodation block built for 30 elderly at the TLC old age home. The presentation was successful and Kwalata foundation sponsored 30 000 bricks, 125 bags of cement and Oasis Church sponsored R12 000 worth of ready mix cement!

Kwalata are going to do the foundations for the old age home on Mandela Day (18 July)! They are inviting members to come and participate with City of Tshwane Mayor Ramagopa and the sponsors they have lined up. All participating partners are invited and you are please asked to confirm your attendance. According to Kwalata the Mayor of the City of Tshwane has also identified the TLC as a priority and will be investing time at the TLC. DESTO Skills centre, the project team, will facilitate the initiative.

Kwalata is requesting that each participating organisation please bring along a wheelbarrow and round nose shovel to be used on the day. Kwalata is planning to order 15m² of Ready mix Concrete to be delivered at the TLC on Monday @ 10:00. All participants will assist in laying the foundations and should come dressed appropriately - gumboots and overalls! Participants can meet at Kwalata 09:00 and then 09:30 go to TLC.

Please contact Charl Pretorius on (012) 711 8200 for further information or to confirm your participation.

Pretoria National Botanical Gardens

The Pretoria National Botanical Garden will, on Saturday 16 July, host a tea party for 250 pensioners from the surrounding community to mark Mandela Day. Mandela Day is celebrated across the globe on 18 July. The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) - custodian of the Nine National Botanical Gardens - has hosted a Pensioner's Tea Party since the inaugural Mandela Day in 2009. This year, for the first time ever, all nine National Gardens will host pensioners on the morning of 16 July.

Pensioners from the areas of Eersterust, Mamelodi, Mamelodi East, Cullinan, Arcadia, Sunnyside, Laudium and Olievenhoutbosch, will arrive at the Pretoria Garden at 10:00 where they will be entertained by the Refilwe Church Choir, Voices Devine and Perfect Voice Institute SA. The visitors will then be treated to a tour of the Garden's special features, such as its colourful medicinal Garden and the fascinating enabling Garden which is essentially a demonstration Garden for those who are physically challenged or the elderly who cannot garden with ease. The Pretoria National Botanical Garden also features an Edible Garden, a Cycad Garden, a man made water fall and a wetland area which attracts a wide range of fascinating birdlife.

After the Garden tour, the pensioners will be served tea at the Garden's Mokha restaurant. Before leaving, the visitors will each receive a special gift to take home.

Commenting on the upcoming event, SANBI CEO Dr Tanya Abrahamse said: "We know that older people really enjoy being around trees and flowers. We also know that many of them have never been to our Gardens. So, as part of our 67 minutes of service, in honour of Madiba, we are more than happy to host tea parties for the elderly and share our beautiful Gardens with them. We will also be donating plants to the pensioners and the homes which care for them."

Each National Botanical Garden has one day a week - throughout the year - where pensioners are allowed free entrance.

Gauteng Tourism Summit: Creating an efficient, green & inclusive economy starts here!

On 21 and 22 July the Gauteng Tourism Authority and the MEC for Economic Development Qedani Mahlangu are convening the 2011 Gauteng Tourism Summit in order that all key stakeholders are able to engage with the development of the Gauteng tourism strategy on a practical level. The intention is to facilitate greater understanding and to enrich the content of the strategy, but more specifically it is to obtain consensus as to how to take strategic theory and translate it into practical actions which will help Gauteng build a globally competitive tourism economy.

The Summit programme is designed to address the most pressing issues facing tourism in Gauteng today and will be professionally moderated by key industry leaders and experts. The interactive and dynamic sessions (including formal addresses, video conferencing, facilitated open Dialogues, and on-going digital research) will be presented in a highly interactive manner that encourages audience participation in debates and maximises innovative thinking and constructive interaction.
