New stamp to commemorate the Centenary of the birth of Nontsikelelo Albertina Sisulu

The South African Post Office Museum will be issuing a new stamp to commemorate the Centenary of the birth of Nontsikelelo Albertina Sisulu. She was a dutiful daughter, mother, wife, neighbour, health care worker, freedom fighter and ultimately to those who knew her; a caring, resourceful and committed person. Nontsikelelo, meaning the blessed girl in isiXhosa, was born healthy on 21 October 1918 despite her mother's affliction with the Spanish flu that had killed over 30000 people in the Transkei, Eastern Cape.

Nontsikelelo assumed the name Albertina when she started school as African children had to have 'Christian' names for school. Upon completing her high school studies, she trained as a nurse at a Johannesburg "Non-European" hospital called Johannesburg General in January 1940. When Albertina met Walter Sisulu in 1941, he was already a staunch member of the African National Congress (ANC) and her political awareness was only just budding. Their relationship was to be a truly remarkable love story. They were married in 1944; Nelson Mandela and his then wife Evelyn were best man and bridesmaid. Albertina joined the ANC Women's League when it was formed in 1948 thus begun the life of Albertina as an activist in her own right.

After joining the ANC Women's League, Albertina began to assume leadership roles in the ANC and in the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW) in the 1950s and was one of the organizers of the historic anti-pass women's march in 1956. Albertina and her family were subjected to a life of uncertainty and financial instability as she could be detained or arrested at any time from the late 1950s to the 1980s. She was the first person to be detained under the General Laws Amendment Act.

The Act gave the police the power to hold suspects in detention for 90 days without charging them, and in Albertina's case she was placed in solitary confinement incommunicado for almost two months. This was a precursor to her life as a banned person in South Africa. In July 1981, Albertina had been banned for 18 years, the longest any person in South Africa had been banned. Fortunately she was very resourceful and managed to keep her head above the waters and to keep her family and extended family intact throughout.

In 1983 Albertina was elected as one of three presidents of the United Democratic Front (UDF) along with Oscar Mpetha and Archie Gumede. The UDF was an umbrella body for more than 400 organizations throughout the country at its inception; these included trade unions, women's groups, sports groups and faith-based and civic organizations. The UDF was able to fill the void left open by the banning of political organisations and it worked hard in intensifying the fight against the apartheid government. Albertina was accommodative of others in the struggle who were not members of the ANC, UDM and FEDSAW. She worked for Dr Abu Asvat who was politically aligned with AZAPO (Azanian People's Organization) and her daughter, Lindiwe was active in the Black People's Convention (BPC) at some stagebefore going into exile. When her husband, Walter, was released from prison as one of the Rivonia Trialists together with Nelson Mandela and others, they had been apart for at least 25 years. She had kept the home fires burning and had realised the fruit of her activism and sacrifice. The stamp issue features two standard postage rate stamps on a sheet of ten; there is no First Day Cover. The images are of a young and an elderly Albertina. The stamps were designed by Rachel-Mari Ackermann of Philatelic Services.

Hungry students continue to benefit from ongoing partnerships with Menlyn Park Shopping Centre and TUKS FM

Following the success of the 2018 Back2School campaign, Menlyn Park Shopping Centre and TUKS FM are continuing their support with the University of Pretoria students in their back to school campaign. In 2018, the partnership was able to provide approximately 170 students with meals for 6 months.

Research conducted by the Higher Education Department estimates that about 216,000 students in South Africa are without suitable accommodation, and almost 400,000 beds are needed to meet its enrolment targets for 2030. This has resulted in thousands of squatting tertiary students needing urgent support.

"For this reason, in 2019 the back to school campaign will continue to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds by providing them with necessities such as canned foods, stationery, toiletries and blankets amongst other things and these will remain accessible to them throughout the year," explains Olive Ndebele, General Manager at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre. "We recognise the need to support students. For this reason, we will continue working with TUKS FM and ensure that our retailers are able to help them reach their academic goals."

Menlyn Park Shopping Centre has set up collection boxes, these collection points are linked to customer purchases aimed at encouraging the Pretoria community and corporates to donate to the learners at the University of Pretoria from 28 January - 15 February 2018. Some retailers will match the donations made by customers, while others are encouraging customer support by linking their donations to Back2School prices such as tablets.

"It is without a doubt that the donations received last year brought change into the students' lives by ensuring that they had meals to sustain them during the day and enable them to succeed in their studies. Hunger is an obstacle which we need to remove to ensure that students are not compromised in terms of attaining academic success," Dr Matete Madiba, University of Pretoria.

Wings for Life World Run - road closures in Centurion

The Wings for Life World Run is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 5 May 2019.

It is the first event of its kind, in which the entire world runs together simultaneously, to raise funds to find a cure for spinal cord injury. This ground-breaking race formant means that at 13:00, and at equivalent times across the globe, thousands of competitors will start to run in 13 countries globally.

On Sunday, 5 May 2019 the world will run as one, and Tshwane has been selected, for the fourth time, as the Host City and the only event on the African Continent.

The start and finish venue for the South African even is The Irene Agricultural Farm (ARC) in Centurion.

The format of the Wings for Life World Run is a first, not only in running, but for all other sporting events. Routes will be defined; however, runners will not be running a set distance; unlike other races the finish line is chasing them rather than them running towards it.

Half an hour after the start signal sounds and the first runners leave the start line, an official Catcher Car will set off pursuing the runners. This pace will accelerate at determined intervals at a rigid global schedule. When the Catcher Car passes a runner, their race is over, and runners are asked to board a shuttle bus which will take them back to the finish area.

To ensure the safety of both runner as well as the residents, the City of Tshwane and Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department will implement TOTAL ROAD CLOSURE on the first 22km along the route.

The dedicated Call Centre: 011 017 2700 - will be operational every weekday and on race day to assist with all route, road closure and alternative route queries. Watch out for the bright yellow traffic advisories that will be erected from 25 April on all directly affected roads.

12:30-14:30 Glen Rd (M18) - from Midstream Ridge Drive to Alexander Rd
12:45-15:00 Botha Ave (M18) - from Alexander Rd to Hofmeyer Rd
13:00-15:00 Hofmeyer Rd - from Botha Ave to Kruger Ave
13:00-15:00 - Kruger Ave - from Hofmeyer Rd to Trichardt Rd (M10)
13:00-15:30 - Trichardt Rd (M10) - from Kruger Ave to Old Johannesburg road (R101)
13:30-15:45 - Weirda Rd (M10) - from Old Johannesburg Road (R101) to the R55
The route will continue with a right on the R55, a left on Main Rd (M26), another left on the R114, a right on Rooihuiskraal and then a final left onto Samrand Rd. The full road closure will end once our runners reach the R55 and will then become a rolling closure.
