It has been a while since the last TTA newsletter and that is because the TTA office has been very busy putting together product information for marketing initiatives and collecting feedback and input from you, the industry in Tshwane.
The new national, regional and local conference and visitor bureaus are all well within various stages of development, implementation and, in some cases, already operational. The TTA office is assisting with collecting information on tourism products and services in Tshwane to help you make the most of the opportunities presented by these developments. If you have not yet submitted your businesses details please contact Vanessa urgently to ensure that your information is included to benefit from the expected growth in these markets.
Various surveys are underway to determine what kind of development needs to take place in our city and region to support growth in tourism. The TTA office has sent out questionnaires for your input in this regard - no-one knows better what we need to grow than the businesses who deal with our visitors every day so if you would like to have your say please do ensure that you complete and return these documents as per the details in the various e-mails.
Last but not least we promised you feedback from the workshops held with Gauteng Tourism Authority Convention and Visitors Bureau as well as summary information from the presentations done at our last members' meeting by the City of Tshwane on plans to develop tourism in the city. As soon as this information is received it will be sent out to you via e-mail so please do keep an eye out!
We have reached the middle of the calendar year and, while the tourism environment is still not as stable and predictable as most of us would like it to be, we do trust that the positive developments to grow tourism in SA from a national, regional and local level, do bear fruit and begin to deliver an upward growth curve for our industry.

The Tshwane Tourism Association on the 3rd of July 2012 donated linens and other items from the Hotels to the Leratong Hospice in Atteridgeville. This is another initiative by the Association to give out to the needy. Please read the article on the Pretoria News.
One other initiative we are involved in is the Soup Kitchen where we donate 40 litres of Soup for 52 week to a Methodist church in Sunnyside. The Linens, cutlery and Soup are donated by the Members of the Tshwane Tourism Association.

The Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) has confirmed that the inaugural Travel & Tourism Business Exchange will take place from September 2-4 in Johannesburg.
The conference will comprise two and a half days of deliberations, exhibitions, networking and social events with an expanded programme allowing for close delegate interaction. The venue is still to be confirmed.
It is a joint initiative between TBCSA and five of its member associations: The Association of South African Travel Agents (Asata), Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (Fedhasa), National Accommodation Association of South Africa (NAA-SA), Southern African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (Savrala) and the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA).
"The main objective of hosting a joint industry conference is to facilitate industry co-operation and reduce the proliferation of conferences within the sector," said TBCSA CEO, Mmatšatši Marobe.
"By convening one conference at the beginning of Tourism Month 2012 we aim to create a central platform where members can address industry-specific issues, as well as the challenges and opportunities that impact on the entire sector," she said.
"One industry conference will save valuable time and money when compared with previous years where all tourism associations hosted member-based conferences on an annual basis. These conferences usually attract the same delegates and tend to address the same macro-economic issues," said Michael Tatalias, CEO of SATSA.
"This is an event not to be missed and we want to urge all our members within Fedhasa and the broader travel and tourism business community to diarise these dates," said Eddy Khosa, CEO of Fedhasa.
Marobe said the timing of the conference was significant, with September being Tourism and Heritage Month in South Africa. "This is an opportune time to reflect on the current state of the industry and to further deliberate growth opportunities for our industry. We urge all travel and tourism operators to diarise the date and make sure they do not miss this important industry gathering."

On 11 May 2012, the Sustainable Tourism Network Southern Africa (STNSA) hosted its fourth Annual Meeting at the Hilton Hotel in Durban, South Africa. The purpose of this meeting was to evaluate the four-year history of the STNSA and define a new programme of work in response to current trends in the sustainable tourism certification environment. The meeting was attended by 26 delegates representing 6 countries from southern and East Africa.
A main outcome of the meeting was to re-launch the STNSA as the Sustainable Tourism Certification Alliance Africa, with a clearly defined scope of work to create an enabling environment for sustainable tourism certification. The Alliance will focus initially on southern and East Africa but will over time reach out to sustainable tourism certification stakeholders throughout Africa.
The Capital Hotel School and Training Academy is exceptionally proud of second year Professional Cookery student Stephen Coetzee, accompanied by Chef Wesley Cameron, who represented CHS at the 2012 City and Guilds Skills Challenge that took place in Cape Town at Hostex at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 15 to 17 May. Out of approximately thirty entries from all over South Africa, CHS was one of four finalists that made the cut.
Each year registered City and Guilds and SACA training providers are invited to enter for the challenge and the finalists have to proof there skills and knowledge of the Culinary Industry over three days. Challenges ranged from basic knife skills, portioning and de-boning rabbit to removing fillets from carcasses. All of that is much easier said than done - especially when the experienced judges scrutinize every action with a magnifier!
Sweating it out over three days was a stressful experience for all participants, but they enjoyed the event tremendously. The four competitors were CHS, HTA, Capsicum Cape Town and A Thousand Hills Hotel School. HTA, our sister company took the honours this year. Well done to them! The judges were Peter Robertson (Executive Chef of the CITCC); Henrik Johsson (University of Johannesburg); James Khoza (Sandton Sun); Nicholas Froneman (Palace of the Lost City). The Judges Convener was Jodi Ann Pearton.
Gate (Guest House Association of Tshwane/Pretoria East) has recently nominated Rosemarie Van Staden to be their Chairperson.
Rosemarie has been serving in on Gate for quite some time and has enormous experience in the Hospitality industry. She was earlier this year nominated to stand In for GATE on the TTA Board.
Rosemarie is the Owner of The Angel's Place Boutique Hotel in Moreletta.
The Voortrekker Monument in conjunction with Freedom Park on 31 May 2012 conducted a visit to these two places for young girls as a part of the "take a Girl Child to work" initiative.
The girls had a free guided tour of the Monument and there were several other points of interest during the day.
