Exhibition of South African Black Artists – The Pretoria Art Museum Collection, 1964–1994
When the Pretoria Art Museum opened its doors to the public on 20 May 1964, it had only one piece of artwork by a black artist. This artwork, by Simon Lekgetho, was part of the nucleus collection that hung in the City Hall and the Municipal Offices of the then City Council of Pretoria before the existence of the Pretoria Art Museum. For a museum that was tasked with collecting modern art through an informal policy that favoured South African Old Masters, ie the works of JH Pierneef, Frans Oerder, Maggie Laubser and European art that had influenced the development of early South African art, the collection of black artists was initially compromised.
However, over the years as our country witnessed the political repression of the 1960s and went through the 1970s, which saw the youth uprising of 1976, and the turn into the eighties wherein the apartheid government declared states of emergencies as our townships erupted in resistance, the museum slowly built a collection of South African black artists. The archives of the museum confirm it has more than 80 artworks by black artists. This exhibition aims to bring this body of work to the public’s attention and afford it the opportunity to reflect on the kind of works that have found their place into the collection in the three decades leading to 1994. On show, there will be works by Daniel Rakgoathe, George Pemba, Noria Mabasa, Jackson Hlungwane, Louis Maqhubela and Moshile wa Nthodi, to name a few artists.
The South African black artists in the Pretoria Art Museum collection, 1964–1994 will be on show in the Pretoria Art Museum’s North Gallery on Tuesdays to Sundays, from 10:00 to 16:00, with guided tours arranged by appointment. The exhibition will be on show until Sunday, 1 March 2020.

Commemoration of the Battle of Isandlwana
On the panel will be Advocate Sipho Mantula, a Human Rights Activist, who will tackle the execution of this battle looking at Conflict Resolution from an African perspective. He is a professor at UNISA based in the College of Law, Institute for Conflict Resolution in Africa.
Alongside him will be Mbuso Khoza, a vocalist and songwriter who will be leading the African Heritage Ensemble at the Joburg Theatre in Isandlwana: The Musical. He will tackle the topic from a creative’s perspective. In his interview, Khoza said, “this is a South African story of how unity of purpose has achieved what experts would have called the impossible as Africans demonstrated the readiness to lay down their own lives in defence of their land”.
The 22nd January 1879 is a day in African history that the world ought to remember. The mighty Zulu army defeated the British soldiers armed with artillery and firearms at the Battle of Isandlwana. The heavily armed British Military Force suffered a shocking humiliation when the Zulu Battalions defeated them with their spears and shields. This is a day to celebrate the wisdom, determination and courage South Africans inherited from their ancestors. It is a day to celebrate victory against land dispossession, human rights violation and crime against humanity
Date: Tuesday, 11 February 2020

Venue: DITSONG: National Museum of Military History, 22 Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, Johannesburg
