Monthly Update from the Chair | Susan Marais
Dear Members,
I used to think that tourism was about places. Discovering, exploring and learning about new cities is one of my favourite things in the world. It is a well-known fact that I will drop everything for a plane ticket to an interesting destination. However, this month I was reminded again that tourism is just as much about people!
In June, we had the privilege of gathering for two truly meaningful moments in our calendar: an exceptionally valuable and fun GMs Meeting at Capital Hotel School, and a deeply energising and delicious AGM hosted at the beautiful Kievits Kroon Gauteng Wine Estate. A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise, attend or support these events. The warmth, excellence and hospitality we experienced were a proud reflection of what Tshwane stands for.
For those who couldn’t attend the AGM, the message was simple but powerful: progress and partnership. We reflected on the success of the Tshwane Showcase, the growing reach of our guide and campaigns, and the strong ties we’re building with institutions like the City of Tshwane, TMPD and our university partners. We also looked ahead — to new training roadmaps, better signage support, insurance discounts, the Golf Day, the Awards, and a 25-year celebration in 2026 that promises to be a milestone for us all.
We also shared some honest insights including the need for stronger member participation to meet our financial and operational goals. Your membership fees, event attendance and active engagement are not just appreciated, they are essential. Together, they create the momentum needed to unlock more benefits, more advocacy, and a bigger platform for all our members to shine.
There was a clear thread running through every conversation at the AGM: this is a team effort. Our members are big and small, each with their own unique character and product offering and there is space at the table for everyone. We urge you to take part, show up, and keep building the kind of tourism industry we all believe in.
So as we head into July, we invite you to keep doing just that. Buy your tickets for the Tshwane Tourism Awards. Book a 4-ball for the Golf Day. Share your training courses. Attend a fellow member’s event. Tshwane is a world-class city and we are stronger when we grow it together!
Warm regards,
Susan Marais
Chairperson, Tshwane Tourism Association
TTA Board member of the month
Meet Mpho Matidze: Championing Tourism Growth in Tshwane
At the heart of Tshwane’s vibrant tourism landscape stands Mpho Matidze, a passionate industry leader, educator, entrepreneur, and proud board member of the Tshwane Tourism Association (TTA). With an impressive blend of experience, vision, and community spirit, Mpho plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of tourism in the capital.
Currently serving as a mentor in the tourism industry, Mpho is deeply committed to guiding and nurturing the next generation of tourism professionals. His mentorship extends far beyond theory, equipping young people with practical skills and insights that position them as key contributors in promoting Tshwane to both local and global travellers.
As a TTA Board Member representing the Tour Operators and Travel Agencies Chapter, Mpho actively advocates for the growth and sustainability of this essential sector. His voice on the board ensures that the unique challenges and opportunities within tour operations and travel agencies are brought to the forefront of industry discussions.
Mpho’s career began in the car rental sector, a steppingstone that soon led him to the academic field where he worked as a Lecturer in Tourism. His time in higher education not only deepened his expertise but also ignited a lifelong passion for the industry, one that would eventually evolve into La Luonde Tours, a proudly owned tour company whose name means The Great Warthog in Venda, Mpho’s place of origin.
Having relocated from Venda to Tshwane, Mpho has embraced the city as his second home. His journey in Pretoria has further fuelled his love for the region and its potential as a leading destination. This connection is more than professional,it’s personal.
Outside of his formal roles, Mpho is first and foremost a family man. He takes immense pride in fatherhood and is intentional about instilling the values of travel, heritage, and curiosity in his children. Whether exploring local museums, visiting historical sites, or enjoying a meal at a favorite restaurant in Brooklyn, Mpho sees tourism as more than a career, it’s a lifestyle.
When asked about his favorite places in and around Tshwane, Mpho highlights:
- The Union Buildings – for their historical depth, panoramic views, and symbolic importance.
- Menlyn Mall – a dynamic hub that blends retail, lifestyle, and culture in a uniquely Tshwane way.
- Brooklyn – known for its culinary scene, where he enjoys both family meals and professional meetups.
With leaders like Mpho Matidze steering the vision, Tshwane’s tourism sector continues to thrive with purpose, authenticity, and heart.
TTA Board Statement in Support of the Minister of Tourism’s Response to U.S. Travel Advisory
The Tshwane Tourism Association (TTA) Board fully supports the Minister of Tourism’s recent statement in response to the updated U.S. Travel Advisory. We echo her assurance that South Africa remains open, welcoming and one of the most rewarding destinations in the world.
Here in Tshwane — South Africa’s safest metropolitan area — tourism continues as normal. Visitors are arriving, enjoying our attractions and being met with the warm, friendly service our city is known for. We acknowledge the safety concerns raised, but we firmly believe this is the time to highlight the incredible good happening across our country — from thriving small businesses and resilient communities to proactive partnerships working to ensure safer tourism.
In Tshwane, we are proud to be at the forefront of solutions. Through the Safest Capital Campaign and the CASI Safety App, we are not just reacting to fear — we are building real, scalable support to help both guests feel safer and staff stay safe.We warmly invite you to be part of the 1-Million Challenge — a collective effort to make Tshwane even safer for all who live, work and visit here.
- Consider registering your team members on the CASI Safety App — because safety truly starts from within.
- Display the QR code where guests can easily scan and download the app.
- Please consider including guest access as part of your room rate or packages — a small gesture with meaningful impact.
Contact the TTA office on admin@tshwanetourism.com to facilitate any one of above processes. If one million people in our city join the app, one in four will become a walking, talking safety connection, helping us respond faster, support each other better and promote peace of mind for all.
The last thing our industry needs is further fearmongering. Let’s replace fear with facts, panic with preparation and uncertainty with united action. Together, we can show the world that Tshwane is not only a beautiful place to visit — it is a safe, welcoming one too.
TTA AGM 2025: A Celebration of Progress, Connection and Innovation at Kievits Kroon
On Thursday, 19 June 2025, members of the Tshwane Tourism Association (TTA) gathered at the beautiful Kievits Kroon Country Estate for the highly anticipated Annual General Meeting (AGM). The event was well attended by tourism professionals, business owners, and stakeholders from across the city, all eager to reconnect, reflect and refocus on the future of tourism in Tshwane.
The serene surroundings of Kievits Kroon provided the perfect setting for a productive and inspiring afternoon. Guests enjoyed the estate’s warm hospitality, winter sunshine, and a relaxed yet professional atmosphere that encouraged meaningful networking and collaboration.
TTA Chairperson, Susan Marais, opened the AGM with a warm welcome and a comprehensive update on the Association’s key projects and achievements. She spoke passionately about the growth of the Tshwane Tourism Awards, the positive impact of industry partnerships, and shared exciting plans for upcoming events – including the TTA Golf Day, scheduled for 2 September 2025.
Financial insights were presented by TTA Treasurer, James Martin, who provided members with a clear and transparent update on the Association’s financial health and future plans for sustainable growth.
A highlight of the programme was a guest presentation by Sunelle van Heerden, Business Developer at Hospitality Chatbot Solutions. Her talk, “Transforming Hospitality Communication and Operations with Chatbots,” offered valuable insights into how technology can streamline customer service, boost bookings, and enhance guest experiences within the tourism and hospitality sectors.
The formal proceedings were followed by a relaxed networking session over light refreshments, allowing members to share ideas, build new relationships, and reflect on the shared purpose of promoting Tshwane as a top tourism destination.
The 2025 AGM was a powerful reminder of the strength of collaboration, the importance of innovation, and the continued dedication of those who work tirelessly to grow and support tourism in our city.
